Mwana Africa Holdings (Proprietary) Limited, a private South African company, was established in 2003 by Kalaa Mpinga (born and raised in the DRC) and completed three major mining acquisitions, including the Bindura nickel mine in 2003, the Anmercosa base metal and gold prospects in the Katanga copper belt in 2004, and the Freda Rebecca gold mine in 2005.

The Shangani Nickel Mine is in Matabeleland South, Zimbabwe. The site was first discovered in 1969. The mineralization at this location is from the Neoarchean era 2.80 to 2.50 billion years ago.

Liberation Mining was given a special grant to prospect for coal as well as coal-bed methane gas in the Gwayi-Shangani area by the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development last year. However, the project was stopped because the mine owners had not done an environmental assessment. The Liberation Mine claim is between Gwayi and Shangani rivers.
